Hi Graham,

I have quite severe ulnar deviation of the right hand. It seemed to come on quite quickly and only took a couple of months to go from straight fingers all facing in the right direction to four fingers all heading off to the side!

hi Graham,

Ulnar deviation is a very common feature of RA.
Have you seen an occupational therapist? They can give you tips on how to prevent it getting any worse.

Hi Graham-you're bound to be feeling low right now, it's the way this flipping RA makes us all feel at times. I knew a lot of us on here have taken anti depressants at one time or another and they really do help to get you through the bad times.

If I was you I would ask your GP to refer you to an OT who can maybe give you some splints to help.
YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

hi Graham,

Sorry you are feeling so low, it does affect us all like this from time to time and , as Julie says, many of us take antidepressants. Sometimes depression is the inevitable effect of having a long term illness.
I also think you should ask your GP to refer you for OT as soon as possible.
Don't despair, you will get their in the end, everything with RA takes so much time!

Hi Graham,

As far as I understand, there isn't much that can be done for the ulnar drift apart from surgery. I'm in the process of having various fingers on my right hand operated on but I think that's more for the function in terms of straightening fingers to release the tendons in the hand. So far, my fingers are all still pointing miles to the side and I suspect will be like that now forever.

I know exactly how you feel ... it's very frightening watching your hands deform literally before your eyes. I went from having fully functional albeit painful hands to rather deformed hands and fingers within just a few months. A lot of simple tasks are now impossible.

If I can offer you one piece of advice .... use your hands as much as you can. The less you use them, the quicker the tendons start to cause the deformity and the harder it is to regain the function. Your OT should be able to give you some hand exercises that will definitely help maintain function. One of the exercises that is really important to do regularly is touching the tip of each finger to the tip of your thumb, each finger in turn and finally, the tip of the thumb to the base of the little finger.

There is a very good leaflet published by ARC on hand deformity ...

I hope you manage to see someone soon about this.

Sophie, I'll second that! I didn't use my splints either and have now gone beyond the point where some of the splints will do any good.

Oh, if only for a bit of hindsight!! Razz
